Eight Centuries of Heritage

History of the Abbey

Coombe Abbey Exterior

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605

Coombe Abbey was nearly the setting for one of the most infamous royal kidnappings in British history.

In 1605, 9-year-old Princess Elizabeth — daughter of King James I — was living at Coombe Abbey under the care of Lord Harrington. Guy Fawkes and his conspirators planned to blow up Parliament, assassinate the King, and seize her from Coombe Abbey to proclaim her a puppet Catholic Queen.

Word of the plot leaked just hours before execution. Princess Elizabeth was rushed into the safety of Coventry's fortified city walls shortly before the conspirators arrived.
